Everyday Math Expectations K-5
Everyday Mathematics
allows teachers to do what they do best: teach. It gives teachers materials that allow them to provide students with a rich variety of experiences so children enjoy math. Every activity was developed specifically to help students acquire math skills.
Development of Everyday Math began with research. The authors of the curriculum reviewed existing research on children's mathmatical thinking and on curriculum and instruction. The authors established several basic principles that have guided the developement of Everyday Math.
Children begin school with more mathematical knowledge and intuition than previously believed. Curriculum should build on this intuitive and concrete foundation, gradually helping children gain an understanding of the abstract and symbolic.
Students acquire knowledge and skills, and develop an understanding of mathematics from their own experience. Mathematics is more meaningful when it is rooted in real life contexts and situations.
